Tim winton breath book5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() The novel opens with Bruce as an experienced hard-bitten paramedic, arriving at the scene of young teen found hanged. It tells the story of Bruce Pike, a teenager in small-town Australia during the late 60s. Breath is a slender novel, coming in at under 300 pages with largeish print and plenty of page breaks. I guess at its heart, it’s a coming of age story. I hesitate, therefore, to “recommend” the book, but Breath contains some lyrical writing that gently examines its difficult themes. In the latter stages, it also has strong sexual themes and probes into the devastating effects of abuse. It’s a meditation on teenage rebellion, and is fully capable of giving GeekDad readers sleepless nights. ![]() Breath by Tim Winton is not for parents who are faint of heart. Still not much non-fiction here at Word Wednesday towers, so, like last week, I thought I’d write about the fiction I’ve been reading. ![]()

The penelopiad and the odyssey5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rather than simply being Penelope, wife of Odysseus, she is revealed to be just as wily as her husband. Atwood collates a great many tales into one place to give the meek and patient Penelope a three-dimensional character. Published over fifteen years ago, and before the recent trend of retelling the Greek myths from female perspectives, Margaret Atwood’s 2005 work, The Penelopiad turns around everything we think about Penelope, whilst remaining true to the character written in Homer. She has her loom or sits by the window, waiting for her husband’s return. Penelope has been hailed throughout history as the loving, devoted, clever and faithful wife of Odysseus who waited patiently for twenty years for the return of her husband. ![]() Marcelo in the real world5/9/2023 ![]() In the course of this summer Marcelo faces, thinks about, and discusses with other characters many issues that will fascinate readers as well, from relationships and sex to ethics, human nature, and some unusually deep conversations about religion. And it is seeing Marcelo grow in offbeat understanding of a kind seldom imparted to those with an ordinary view of the world that provides the heart. It is watching Marcelo, with his unusual way of thinking and perceiving, feel his way to a decision and the consequences it will entail that provides the story. The question is what Marcelo will do about it. Here the mystery isn't very mysterious - the reader, and very soon after, Marcelo, have a pretty good idea what happened. ![]() ![]() This book has frequently been compared with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, though the similarities are superficial: a high-functioning autistic teen narrator and a mystery. This is a beautifully written, carefully constructed, thought-provoking and moving story, with a kind of loving wisdom all too rare in fiction these days. ![]() Dirty filthy rich men5/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Especially when I know how much I’ll like it.įrom NYT Bestselling author Laurelin Paige, discover a whole new world filled with sex, love, power, romance and dirty, filthy rich men. For Gaiman, art is redemptive, not because it makes us somehow better, but because it allows us to speak from the very center of our selves. But what makes the speech remarkable is its focus because it was delivered at an art school, it is all about how (and why) we make art. Gaiman’s address has just been released as a small hardcover, under the title “Neil Gaiman’s ‘Make Good Art’ speech” (Morrow: unpaged, $12.99), and if the page design (by Chip Kidd) can be a bit intrusive, the ideas, the enthusiasm, continue to resonate.Įssentially, Gaiman is arguing in favor of engagement, of staying in the moment and appreciating what we’ve got. “And because nobody’s done it before, they haven’t made up rules to stop anyone doing that again.” What he’s getting at is a fundamental faith of the creative life - that rules can be the death of imagination, and that in order to live the lives we want, we must be able, first, to envision them. “If you don’t know it’s impossible, it’s easier to do,” he says. ![]() The ex hex erin sterling5/8/2023 ![]() Read a full summary of The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling below.
